With three SBAM artists involved in the upcoming production of rock musical, Rent, we kicked off a series of Rent Q&As with a Q&A from Bonolo Makhele. Here is what she had to say about her involvement in the Tony Award-winning musical.
Q1: How did you get involved with this project?
After receiving the brief, there was no way I was going to miss out on the opportunity! After the usual audition and callback process, about a week later, I got the exciting email congratulating me on being cast.
Q2: How does it feel to be part of this young ensemble cast for such a well-known musical?
Sometimes it feels incredibly overwhelming, but refreshing as well. Because we are a young group of performers, we bring new and fresh elements to the musical.
Q3: What are you most excited about this role and the production?
Being part of this show’s ensemble is so much fun! As an actor, ensemble work allows one to exercise so many elements of one’s talents! What excites me about this production of Rent is that the characters’ stories get to be told to even more people 20 years after they were written. Also WOW! The music is absolutely phenomenal.
