The Fall wins big at Fleur du Cap Awards

Last week Sunday, the Cape Town theatre industry attended the annual Fleur du Cap Awards. SBAM artists Candice van Litsenborgh and Delray Halgryn were both nominated for contributions to the 2016 musical theatre season, in Sweeny Todd and Annie respectively.

Three SBAM artists were also involved in multi-nominated play, The Fall: Ameera Conrad, Sihle Mnqwazana, and Thando Mangcu. These three artists were honoured with a special award from the Fleur du Cap committee, the Encore Award.

The award category was created this year specifically for The Fall, to recognise brave, new theatre. Ameera says, “It basically is given to a show that responds directly to something that is currently happening in the world and that impacts on how [audiences] think about events that have happened.”

The cast were told (and sworn to secrecy) before the awards ceremony about their special acknowledgement, by Melanie Burke, chairperson of the Fleur du Cap awards. The artists say it has been overwhelming, to receive such an honour, but also for the positive responses from friends, family and other theatre industry members.

Sihle says, “I am deeply humbled. It has encouraged me and I know everyone else greatly.” Ameera, who also directed the show, says, “To be so young and so new in the industry and to receive recognition from the Fleur du Cap judging panel is incredible.” Thando adds, “It is very rare to win an award with your friends, and we all felt honoured to win.”

Following The Fall’s successful season last year, and its performances at Woordfees, the show will be returning to Cape Town audiences this year in June, at the Baxter Theatre. “With the amount of support we are getting, it is only right that The Fall returns,” says Sihle. Tickets can be booked via Computicket.

And after that? What will these young theatre-makers do next? Ameera teases, “We’ve got a few prospects on the horizon which I’m not allowed to talk about just yet, but there are many exciting things on the way!” I am sure we are all excited to see what the stars of The Fall have lined up for us.

Congratulations to all winners and nominees of the Fleur du Cap Awards, and especially to all our SBAM artists!
