Priscilla, Queen of the Desert has delighted Cape Town audiences. We chatted to Michael William Wallace about his part in this musical extravaganza.
Q1: How did opening night go? How have audiences responded so far?
Opening night was amazing!! This show is incredibly technical with loads of energy and the audience gets excited to see that, and that definitely gives us an adrenaline rush.
Q2: What do you enjoy most about your character?
That it keeps on changing. I literally go from being a women to a man, to a paintbrush, to a cupcake, to an Emu…just to name a few.
Q3: What do you love about performing in a musical?
That as a performer you have the opportunity to utilise all three aspects, singing, dancing, and acting, simultaneously.
Q4: Some of the other musicals you’ve performed recently have been quite “dark” (West Side Story, Cabaret). Does it feel different being in a “fun” musical or do approach it the same way?
Most definitely. We joke back stage that we are in a Vegas show and it really does make a difference. We all grew up with the music and even though you’ve heard it a million times you still can’t help tapping your foot to the beat.
